Qualtrics (Survey Tool)

On This Page

The Qualtrics mailer uses a default "from" address of invitation@surveys.mail.cornell.edu and the "reply-to" address of the individual's account. If you want to use custom from and reply-to addresses, we recommend setting up an Exchange Group Account (EGA) mailbox. A corresponding address that's usable in Qualtrics can then be set up to forward mail to the EGA and will resemble name-you-choose@surveys.mail.cornell.edu. Setting up these accounts helps with Cornell email security and deliverability and should be done for very large survey invitation mailings. Learn more about custom "From" and "Reply-To" addresses.

Cornell provides the Qualtrics survey tool for use at no cost by Cornell faculty, staff, and students. Surveys can be created and distributed to gather information in support of the university's educational and research mission and organizational goals.

Use the Survey Tool

The Qualtrics Experience Basecamp provides training videos. Cornell is licensed for the CoreXM survey tool. If prompted to sign in, select Sign in with SSO. For Organization ID, type cornell. You will then be able to sign in using CUWebLogin.

Use of Surveys for Research

Human participant research conducted by or on behalf of Cornell researchers must receive prior approval or exemption from Cornell University's Institutional Review Board (IRB).

Even in some cases where IRB review is not required under federal regulations, researchers conducting online surveys may nevertheless need to comply with Europe’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) when collecting identifiable or coded personal data from persons who are physically present in certain European countries at the time of data collection.

Email the IRB or Cornell’s Privacy Officer to ensure that your research complies with the GDPR.

To determine whether or not your research requires review and approval by the IRB, review the decision tree Does Your Project Require an Application to the Cornell IRB Office? (linked under Do I Need IRB Approval?), a PDF published by Cornell's Office of Research Integrity and Assurance. Visit the IRB website for more information.

Any downloading of sensitive data from Qualtrics may only go to a computer, device, or server that is approved to handle it. Personally owned computers and devices should not be used, and work computers should be enrolled in Certified Desktop.

Support

In addition to the documentation on this website, you can visit Qualtrics Support for answers to most other questions and assistance with using the service. See Sign In to Submit a Request to Qualtrics Support.

Qualtrics can help you with most, but not all, things you need to do with their survey service. The following are handled by CIT, and you can submit a support request by clicking the appropriate subject.

If you are a researcher looking to recruit participants for your research, see Qualtrics' website of for-fee panel services.

Accessibility

Cornell University is committed to diversity and inclusiveness with the goal of providing an accessible, usable, and welcoming environment for faculty, staff, students, and visitors with disabilities.

Qualtrics' Check Survey Accessibility feature diagnoses your survey, indicates which questions are inaccessible, and gives other recommendations for increased accessibility to help you work towards WCAG 2.0 AA (and Section 508) compliant surveys.
