Spam Control

Keeping junk email out of your account
The PureMessage service is being phased out.

If your email address ends with @cornell.edu, your mail is not affected by PureMessage, but is instead handled by Microsoft or Google. Some departments with departmental addresses (@something.cornell.edu) are still using PureMessage, but all are in the process of phasing it out.

CIT uses a tool called PureMessage to help keep unwanted messages out of your email's Inbox. PureMessage does two things:

  • It prevents virus-infected email from reaching your computer.
  • It looks for spam-like characteristics in all messages and for each message, assigns a probability that the message is spam.

Based on that probability, it either:

  • Quarantines the message (if the "spam probability" is greater than 50%)
  • Delivers the message (probability less than 50%)
