In 2024, automated processes were set up that delete unused Microsoft 365 groups after a year of inactivity. This maintenance includes any SharePoint sites affiliated with a group, such as ones that were created when a team in Teams was created. However, SharePoint sites unaffiliated with a group have previously not been managed automatically because Microsoft had not yet provided tools to do so. Those are now available, and automated cleanup of unused SharePoint sites not affiliated with a group will begin in late August 2025.

After six months of inactivity, the longest period that Microsoft’s tool allows for this type of site, SharePoint sites not affiliated with a group will be deleted. After the automation is enabled, notices will start being sent to site owners in advance of the site cleanup asking them to either confirm the site is still needed or delete the site. Activity includes visits to the site, edits to the site, downloads, posts, and other interactions.

To help ensure the site notifications can be received and acted on, two site owners will be required for each site. For sites with only one owner, the owner will receive an email requesting that an additional owner be added.
