Qualtrics (Survey Tool)

Qualtrics (Survey Tool)

Surveys and forms for the Cornell community
Due to changes made by Qualtrics to improve email delivery, it will soon be necessary when using the Qualtrics Mailer to use as the "From Address" either the default or an address set up by contacting surveys@cornell.edu. The address will need an Exchange Group Account (EGA) mailbox to connect to and will resemble nameyouchoose@surveys.mail.cornell.edu.

After the change occurs, typing in an address that has not been set up in the system in advance will result in Qualtrics not sending the invitation. Also, the "Reply-To Address" will need to be the email associated with the Cornell Qualtrics Account that is signed in, or an approved "From Address."

Until this change is made, you can continue to use addresses you previously have ending in @cornell.edu for "From" or "Reply-To" addresses.

Cornell provides a survey tool, Qualtrics, for use at no cost by Cornell faculty, staff, students, and retirees. Users can create and distribute their own surveys and gather information in support of the university's educational mission and organizational goals. Qualtrics has been reviewed by CIT's security team and approved for conducting surveys at Cornell.

Use the Survey Tool

Learn how to create and distribute a survey at the Qualtrics Academic Support Portal. Click Qualtrics Support, then under Select a support topic, click Survey Platform. In the left-hand menu, starting partway down, you'll see entries for different parts of Qualtrics (Projects Page, Survey Tab, Action Tab, etc.) The first listing under each is an overview of that subject, followed by more specific topics.

If you prefer learning by video, visit the Qualtrics Experience Basecamp. Click Qualtrics CoreXM or Research Methodology. If prompted to sign in, click Sign in with SSO. For Organization ID, type cornell. You will then be able to sign in using CUWebLogin. You'll be asked to authorize the application.

Use of Surveys for Research
Human participant research conducted by or on behalf of Cornell researchers must receive prior approval or exemption from Cornell University's Institutional Review Board (IRB).  Even in some cases where IRB review is not required under the federal regulations, researchers conducting online surveys may nevertheless need to comply with Europe’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) when collecting identifiable or coded personal data from persons who are physically present in certain European countries at the time of data collection.  Contact the IRB (irbhp@cornell.edu) or Cornell’s Privacy Officer (gdpr@cornell.edu) to ensure that your research complies with the GDPR.

To determine whether or not your research requires review and approval by the IRB, review the decision tree Is your activity covered under the Human Research Protection Program? (linked under Do I Need IRB Approval?), a PDF published by Cornell's Office of Research Integrity and Assurance. Visit the IRB website for more information.

Support

In addition to the documentation on this website, you can visit Qualtrics Support for answers to most other questions and assistance with using the service. See Sign In to Submit a Request to Qualtrics Support.

Qualtrics can help you with most, but not all, things you need to do with their survey service. The following are handled by CIT. Contact surveys@cornell.edu or the IT Service Desk if you need help with:
  • Changing survey ownership
  • Recovering a deleted survey
  • Sending an invitation to a very large group
  • Adjusting account permissions, or other account-related issues, such as moving your account to a different institution
