Move Your Email
Whether you are joining or leaving Cornell, you will want to move your email with you.
This article applies to: Cornell Google Workspace for Faculty and Staff , Cornell Google Workspace for Students , Email @ Cornell , Microsoft Outlook
Cornell offers two options for email platforms: Outlook through Microsoft 365 and Gmail through Google Workspace. If you’ve accumulated email over a long period of time, the options at Move Your Personal Data are a better fit. This information gives you ways you can move small amounts of email manually.
Since vendors can alter instructions at any time, the sections below point you to their step-by-step instructions.
Outlook (Microsoft 365)
Export your email into a .pst
file that you can then import into another Microsoft 365 account.
Leaving Cornell: If you are moving your email from Microsoft 365 at Cornell into a different service (for example, iCloud or Yahoo), first check for instructions at your new email provider. They may suggest a different way to transfer your email.
Joining Cornell: If you are moving your email from a different service (for example, iCloud or Yahoo) into Microsoft 365 at Cornell, follow the appropriate instructions at Import and Export Outlook Email, Contacts, and Calendar.
Gmail (Google Workspace)
Export your data from Gmail will get you started.
Third-Party Email Clients
It is technically possible to use a desktop-based email client to move or save your email. (Apple Mail is an example.) Be aware that when you download your email for the first time, this could take a significant amount of time, and you will likely not retain your web-based mail organizational structure.
If you are coming into the university, check with your current provider to see if this option is available to you.
