Choose Plain or Formatted Text (Gmail / Google Workspace)

Google Workspace (often referred to as Gmail) lets you choose whether to compose and send messages in plain text or formatted text. The default is formatted text; you can switch to plain text for any given message.

To switch to plain text while creating or replying to any email,

  1. Click More options (three vertical dots icon near the lower-right corner).
  2. Select Plain Text Mode.

This will change this message to plain text. If the message previously had formatting, you cannot get that formatting back by deselecting Plain Text Mode.

Safe Links can affect URLs sent in a plain text message.

The standard for messages is Formatted Text. You cannot change the default to plain text for all messages.
