Offline Mode in Outlook

Work with your Microsoft Outlook email and calendar when not connected to the internet.

On This Page

For Cornell Microsoft 365 mailboxes, all your email and calendar are stored in the Microsoft 365 data centers. To work with your information when you are not connected to the internet, your Outlook must have local copies of that information. This requires planning ahead, and the details depend upon which Outlook you are using.

In Outlook for Windows and Outlook for Mac you can work with your calendar, read and reply to messages, and compose new messages while offline. The next time you go online, the work you've done will sync to your online account.

Outlook for Windows

To work offline in Outlook for Windows, find the version of Outlook you're using ("New" vs. "Classic") in the vendor's documentation, then make the required settings adjustments. Review the linked article carefully. There are limitations to what can be done in offline mode.

"New" Outlook won't start up if you're offline. Though if you were running your "New" Outlook inbox before going offline, it will continue to run.

Outlook for Mac

Works offline. Nothing special needs to be done. However, there is no control over what is stored locally, so you may or may not have what you want.

Outlook on the Web

It's not possible to work offline from Outlook on the web.
