Checklist: Keep Your Zoom Meeting Secure
You can enhance the security of your Zoom meeting by choosing protective options. Some of these can be set as the default for all meetings you schedule, some can be chosen when you are scheduling a specific meeting, and some can be used while the meeting is in progress.
Set Security Defaults for All Your Meetings
These options are controlled in Zoom Settings.
Make sure the following are Off
- Participants video (You may also want to turn off Host video, then turn it on in-meeting)
- Join before host
- Remote control
- Allow removed participants to rejoin
- Use Personal Meeting ID (PMI) when scheduling a meeting
Make sure the following are On
- Mute participants upon entry
- Allow host to put attendee on hold
- Screen sharing, with Host Only (the option directly below) selected
- Waiting room. You can choose to either put all attendees there until you admit them, or guests only--attendees who haven't signed into cornell.zoom.us and their Zoom app with their Cornell NetID and password.
If all your attendees are from Cornell, you can make your meeting much more secure by requiring authentication. See your authentication options and how to choose the one that's right for you.
When Scheduling an Individual Meeting
You have the ability to confirm when setting up a meeting that you'd like to keep the default settings.
(Participants will join with their video turned off until they turn it on)
Enable join before host
(No one, other than alternate hosts or co-hosts, can join before you do)
Mute participants upon entry
(Participants will join with their microphone muted until they unmute)
Enable waiting room
(You decide who comes in)
After Launching the Meeting
- In the Zoom window toolbar, click Manage Participants.
- At the bottom of the Participants pane, select More, then uncheck Allow Participants to Rename Themselves.
In the event of meeting disruption
Mute everyone and don't let them unmute.
- At the bottom of the Participants pane, click Mute All.
- In the window that appears, uncheck the box for Allow participants to unmute themselves, then click Continue.
- You'll see a message that says Current and new participants will be muted.
Remove the disruptive attendee.
- Next to the name of the person you want to remove, click More.
- From the list that appears, click Remove.
Lock the meeting so no one can come in.
- At the bottom of the Participants panel, click More.
- From the list that appears, click Lock Meeting.
Also, encourage students to sign into Zoom with their Cornell NetID and password and install the Zoom app and sign in through that before class. This will:
- Create a Zoom account for them if they haven't already
- Let them directly into the meeting instead of the waiting room
- Provide better information in the Participants list in the meeting
