Install SPSS Statistics for Windows

The current release of SPSS Statistics is v29. The installation process for all supported versions is nearly identical; the only thing that changes is the version number itself.

You must run the SPSS installer from a user account that has full Administrator rights on your Windows computer.

The current release of SPSS Statistics requires 64-bit Windows. If you are not sure what version you have, please check with your local IT provider.

  1. Download the SPSS installer from the CU Software SPSS page.
  2. After download, right-click the installer, then select Run as Administrator. You'll be prompted to sign in to an account with Administrator access rights.
  3. After launch, the installer will report that it is extracting files. Allow it to continue. The extraction screen may disappear and reappear more than once.
  4. After extraction is complete, the SPSS Statistics InstallShield Wizard will launch. At the first screen, click Next.
  5. Click the radio button accepting the terms of the IBM License Agreement. Click Next.
  6. In the Destination Folder dialog box, we strongly recommend keeping the default value. Click Next.
  7. In the InstallShield Wizard dialog box, click Install. The installer will run for several minutes. Please be patient, even if the progress bar appears to pause for a few minutes.

  8. Upon successful completion, you should see the InstallShield Wizard Completed message. Click Finish. IBM SPSS Statistics will launch automatically and you will see an Activate SPSS Statistics dialog box.

  9. Click Launch License Wizard.

  10. The SPSS Statistics Licensing Wizard will open and display the Product Authorization dialog box.  If you're installing a standalone license of SPSS Statistics (most customers), choose Authorized User License, then click Next. If your department uses a local SPSS license server to activate, chose the Concurrent User option, then click Next.

  11. Enter your IBM SPSS Statistics Authorization Code for the current license term and version of SPSS Statistics, then click Next. If you do not have your code, you can look it up online via the CU Software Online Store; see How To Look Up Your License Codes.

  12. The Licensing Wizard will authorize your copy of SPSS Statistics over the Internet, then will display the message Authorization Successful. Click Next.

  13. The Licensing Completed dialog box will display a list of all SPSS Statistics sub-products installed and activated, with the product expiration date of the current license term. Click Finish.

Your copy of SPSS Statistics is installed and activated. It should now be ready for use.

Install SPSS Statistics (Mac)

You must run the SPSS installer from a user account that has full Administrator rights on your Mac.

The current release of SPSS Statistics is v29. The instructions for all supported versions (26, 27, 28, and 29) are nearly identical. Screen names reflect the version you are installing, and some screens may appear in a different order than presented below.

  1. Download the appropriate installer disk image from the CU Software SPSS page. The file name will be SPSS_Statistics_29-0-0_mac.dmg.
  2. After download is complete, double-click the installer file. A disk image will appear called SPSSStatistics. Depending on your computer's settings, a Finder window of the same name will also open. If the window does not open by itself, double-click the disk image named above to open the window manually.
  3. In the SPSSStatistics window, double-click the icon SPSS_Statistics_Installer.
  4. You may receive a warning, "This is an application downloaded from the Internet. Are you sure you want to open it?" Click Open. You will then be prompted to enter your macOS administrator username and password. Please do so, and click OK to continue.
  5. You may be prompted to install a new Helper application; if so, allow the installation and click OK.
  6. In the IBM SPSS Statistics installer dialog box, select your language (English is default) and click OK to start the installation process.
  7. On the Introduction dialog box, click Next.
  8. On the License Type dialog box, select the Authorized user license radio button, then click Next. (Note: If you are installing SPSS onto a machine that will be part of a local network/concurrent license, select the Concurrent user license option instead. You will need to have a local SPSS network license server running on your local area network to use this option. Check with your local network administrator for more details.)
  9. On the License Agreement dialog box, you must accept the terms of the license. Click Next.
  10. On the Customer Information dialog box, enter the user name you want to use (your NetID is a good choice), and Cornell University as the organization. Click Next.
  11. On the Help Language dialog box, select any languages in addition to English that you would like the Help screens to display. Click Next.
  12. On the Python Essentials dialog box, choose whether or not you would like to add this SPSS extension. Click Next. You will also need to accept the terms of this additional license to proceed.
  13. On the Choose Install Folder dialog box, select or create a folder to hold the installation. We strongly recommend that you choose the default location. Click Next.
  14. On the Pre-Installation Summary dialog box, review the options you chose and click Install. The installer will run for several minutes.
  15. When the setup wizard has finished, you will see the License dialog box. If you would like to receive email updates about SPSS from IBM, check the box indicated on the screen. Click Done to proceed to license activation.
  16. On the Product Authorization dialog box, click the License Product button in the middle section of the screen. Click Next.
  17. Enter the authorization code you received in your SPSS order confirmation, then click Next. If you don't know your code, you can look it up online via the CU Software Online Store; see How To Look Up Your License Codes.
  18. The installer will report Successfully processed all codes. Click Next.
  19. Click Finish.

You have now completed the installation and license the authorization of your new SPSS software.

Update License Code on Existing SPSS Installation

You cannot upgrade your copy of SPSS Statistics by applying the Authorization Code for a newer version. To upgrade, you must first install the new version, then activate it with that version’s Authorization Code.

IBM no longer supports versions of SPSS older than version 26, and is not releasing product codes for them. If you had been using an older version of SPSS, you must upgrade to version 26 or later.
