Google Account Deactivation

Things to consider if your access to Cornell Google Workspace has ended (or will end soon).

This article applies to: Cornell Google Workspace for Students

On This Page

If you recently lost access to Cornell Google Workspace, but you still need to move data (email and files), you can request a seven day grace period to temporarily regain access.

You will not be able to request another grace period.

You Still Have Access to Your Cornell Email

Alumni can access email though Outlook on the web.

Important

  • By default, all Cornell email first arrives to Outlook and is forwarded to Gmail. A copy of the email stays in Outlook. When you open Outlook for the first time you will see all the email you've received since starting at Cornell sitting in your Outlook inbox unread.
  • The Outlook and Gmail accounts are separate, so any organization from Gmail will not exist in Outlook. You have to re-create folders and filters, and you will not have a copy of any outgoing emails that you have sent from your Gmail account.
  • Any mail you sent from your Gmail account was not copied to Outlook.

What To Consider

Where will you put your files and email?

Cornell's cloud file storage licenses are only available for current students, faculty, and staff. You need your own local storage option (like a hard drive), or another cloud account (for example a personal Google account).

You can move your Cornell Gmail to your Cornell Microsoft 365 account (optional) or a personal Gmail account (recommended).

By default, all Cornell email first arrives to Outlook and is forwarded to Gmail. A copy of the email stays in Outlook. When you switch to Outlook you will see all the email you've received since starting at Cornell sitting in your Outlook inbox unread.

The Outlook and Gmail accounts are separate, so any organization from Gmail will not exist in Outlook. You have to re-create folders and filters, and you will not have a copy of any outgoing emails that you have sent from your Gmail account.

For this reason it may be simpler to move your Cornell Gmail to a personal Gmail account.

Did you share your files?

Your collaborators lose access to the data as well. Here’s how to prevent orphaned files.

How will you move your data?

Data transfer can take hours to days depending on what method you use. See Move Your Personal Data for suggestions.

Are you using “Sign in with Google” anywhere?

If you used your Cornell Google account to “Sign in with Google” for another site or service, access to that service ends. Check your connections here and make the appropriate changes to your account.

Were you forwarding your Google email?

That forwarding also stops. Here’s how to set up forwarding in your Microsoft 365 account.

Request A Grace Period

We strongly recommend that you read all of the information under "What To Consider" before requesting a seven day grace period. Remember, you will not be able to request another extension.

Use this form to request a grace period. You should receive an automatic update once your request is processed, at the email you provide on the form. Generally, you should regain access within 15 minutes.

If you do not see a notice within 24 hours, contact the Support Desk.
