In May 2024, after repeated waves of communications, Google alumni accounts that were over 200 gigabytes were deactivated.

Notifications About This Process

As part of the Strategic Storage Initiative, direct communications were sent to all alumni with Google accounts in 2022 and 2023. Alumni with accounts larger than 200 GB received a series of direct email communications from June 2023 - May 2024. For more information, see the Alumni Affairs and Development website.

How to Retrieve Your Files

To temporarily regain access to your alumni Cornell Google account, complete this form. You will have seven days to reduce your storage below 200 GB. If the account is not below 200 GB at the end of seven days, you will lose access to it again.

In most cases, you should be able to access your account within an hour after submitting the form. During periods when there is a high volume of requests, it may take a little longer.

Before you request the seven-day restoration of access to reduce your account size, plan how you will move your data.

Regain Access to Your Email

Until your storage drops below 200 GB, you will not be able to access Cornell email through Google. Once your account is below 200 GB, there will be a period of six or more hours while the change is processed. After this has completed, you will regain access to your Cornell email.

Due to timing and the scheduling of system updates, it can take up to one or two days before you will be able to use your Cornell email again.

Problems With Transferring Files

Move Your Personal Data lists options for moving files, including the recommended VaultMe service. If you encounter a problem using those services, the Cornell IT Service Desk may be able to offer a suggestion, depending on the issue and the information and resources provided by the vendor. When requesting support, list the steps that you've taken and the specific problem you encountered.
