Microsoft 365 Copilot

Microsoft 365 Copilot integrates advanced AI directly into the Microsoft 365 suite of products—Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, and more. MS 365 Copilot requires a separate subscription.

Microsoft 365 Copilot is reaching the conclusion of a pilot program at Cornell. CIT will publish a news announcement once it opens to a university-wide subscription for faculty and staff.

Microsoft does not include the AI tool in its standard licensing package. The anticipated cost for MS 365 Copilot is $360 annually per individual license.

What Microsoft 365 Copilot Enables

Microsoft 365 Copilot integrates an AI tool directly into the Microsoft suite of products. Cornell's contract with Microsoft allows you to use 365 Copilot to work with low- and moderate-risk data.

Word

Copilot can draft content, rewrite sections, summarize long text, check grammar or reading levels, and suggest tone adjustments.

Excel

Analyze data with natural language. Ask questions like “What are the top trends this quarter?” and get instant charts, insights, and formulas—no advanced Excel skills needed.

PowerPoint

Create presentations from scratch or enhance existing ones. Copilot can generate slides from a Word doc, suggest layouts, and even add speaker notes.

Outlook

Copilot summarizes threads, drafts replies, and helps you manage your inbox more efficiently.

Teams

Copilot can summarize discussions, highlight key decisions, and suggest follow-ups.

See Microsoft's page for more information.

Protect Your Data from Copilot

Whether or not you use Copilot, if your files lack appropriate viewing permissions, you could accidentally expose them to individuals and uses for which they were not intended. Read "Can AI Tools See your Microsoft Files?" and make time to check your files' permission settings.

Use AI Responsibly

Very few AI tools are vetted for use with high-risk data. Become familiar with the data risks your files store, and act accordingly. Cornell has drafted guidelines for using artificial intelligence. All staff and faculty are expected to be familiar with these guidelines when using AI for Cornell-related purposes.
