Troubleshooting: Why Is the From Address in My E-list Email Different?

Cornell made a configuration change to Lyris E-lists in January 2026 to bring E-list posts that are sent by email into better alignment with DMARC security policy enforcement

This article applies to: E-lists (Lyris) , Email @ Cornell

Cornell made a configuration change to Lyris E-lists in January 2026 to bring posts sent by email into better alignment with DMARC security policy enforcement

E-lists that include non-“@cornell.edu” members and to which members post by email were affected by this change.

What Changes Were Made to E-list Posts from Affected Lists?

In email posts coming from affected E-lists (that is, from E-lists including non-“@cornell.edu” member addresses and where posts are made through email), note that:

  • The From: line—which formerly displayed an administrative “bounce” address and the email address of the “poster”—will now show the posting address of the E-list.
  • An informational comment at the beginning of the email will display the name and email address of the E-List poster.

The change will not affect how the Reply and Reply All options in email clients behave when responding to email posts sent through e-lists.

E-list Email Post Examples

For example, an email sent to the E-list “example-L@cornell.edu” by list member “ezra@cornell.edu” before the change looked like this:

From: bounce-123456789-987654@list.cornell.edu on behalf of Ezra Cornell <ezra@cornell.edu>
Subject: Cornell was founded 1865
To: EXAMPLE-L <example-L@list.cornell.edu>
----
First line of the original email…

After the change, the same email post looks like this:

From: example-L@list.cornell.edu
Subject: Cornell was founded 1865
To: example-L@list.cornell.edu
----
(Posted by Ezra Cornell <ezra@cornell.edu>)

First line of the original email…
