Tech Tip: Triage
This article applies to: Get Help
The next time your technology isn't working the way you need it to, try a few quick steps to get it working again. You won't always be able to skip a call or ticket to the IT Service Desk, but you'd be surprised by how many common issues are solved with the steps below.
Make sure your device is up-to-date.
Turn your device off and turn it back on. Don't put it in sleep mode or simply restart! Do a full power cycle.
- Turn it off.
- Unplug it from its power source if possible.
- Leave it off for ten seconds.
- Plug it back in.
- Turn it on.
Browser-based issues? Website not loading correctly? Bad request error?
- First, make sure your browser is up-to-date. Learn how to update Chrome, Firefox, or Edge.
- Try using a different browser (or incognito mode). If the issue is resolved, then Clear Your Browser Cookies, Cache, and History on your preferred browser.
If nothing above works, submit a ticket to the IT Service Desk. Follow these three tips to help them help you:
- Log in with your NetID (if you're able) so that the IT Service Desk knows who you are and what department you're in. This information will help them route you to the correct IT Support Group.
- Include screenshots or the exact text of any errors you receive.
- Be detailed. What is it that you're trying to do, and what happens when you try to do it?
