Qualtrics has long been the central survey tool used by many faculty, students, and staff. Over the years, some members of the Cornell community have indicated a desire to also have a lightweight tool that’s less complex. While its numerous sophisticated features make Qualtrics ideal for research, they can be overkill for simpler information gathering.

To address this need, Microsoft Forms has been added to Cornell's Survey Service. Positioned as "Surveys Lite," it's a lightweight app for simple surveys. It can be used directly in Microsoft Teams and saves responses to Excel Online automatically.

Consider Microsoft Forms for your information gathering needs if you:

  • Want to create a simple form, poll, or lightweight survey
  • Don’t need sophisticated options
  • Do most of your work in Microsoft 365 apps
  • Are comfortable working with the information and guidance provided in Microsoft's learning and support documentation

Qualtrics continues to be available with no change other than now being referred to on the IT@Cornell website as "Surveys for Research (Qualtrics)" to help distinguish the two offerings. It should continue to be your choice when you need a full-featured tool to conduct research or gather feedback in support of the university’s educational or research mission or other organizational goals.
