Mathematica Licensing
This article applies to: Software Licensing and Installation
Mathematica is a highly sophisticated mathematical analysis package developed by Wolfram Research. It features a natural language integration with Wolfram Alpha, which is Wolfram’s online computational engine. A Mathematica license purchased through Cornell University also includes access to Mathematica Onine, a fully-featured web-based version of the application, and Alpha Pro, which will allow you to use the AI-enabled Alpha engine with your own data.
Purchase a License
Mathematica licenses are available to Cornell students, staff, and faculty. There is a licensing fee to use the software. That fee is significantly less than standard academic retail. CIT’s Mathematica license runs from August 1st through July 31st of the following calendar year. All Mathematica licenses expire on the same date, regardless of the date of initial purchase. CIT is not able to offer prorated pricing.
- Staff and faculty licensing: Your Mathematica license is an individual Named-User license that is assigned to you. You may install and activate Mathematica for your own individual use onto any computer that you are authorized to use. Each installation will require a unique Activation Key, which you can generate for yourself at the Wolfram website. Your license entitles you to free upgrades to the latest release as it becomes available. Network licensing is also available: Please contact CU Software Licensing for details about network licensing.
- Student licensing: The Mathematica student license is for students registered at Cornell, and is only for installation onto a student's personally-owned computer. Staff and faculty should not purchase the student edition or activate Mathematica with the student license on any Cornell-owned computer. Doing so will violate Cornell’s license agreement with Wolfram.
