Asterisks (*******) in Qualtrics Data & Analysis Tab or Data Download

This article applies to: Qualtrics (Survey Tool)

When looking at certain fields in Qualtrics's Data & Analysis tab or data downloaded from Qualtrics, such as First Name, Last Name, Email, External Reference, Location Latitude, Location Longitude, and IP address fields, you may see several asterisks (*******) instead of information.

Cornell's default setting for these fields is to restrict them unless the owner of the survey contacts CIT using the Qualtrics support form and asks that "View Restricted Data" be allowed for their account.

Note: Changing this setting will allow you to see this information on all surveys you create.

If you want survey collaborators to also be able to see this information, they must:

  • Sign into surveys.cornell.edu at least once (this will create an account for them in Cornell's Qualtrics service).
  • Also request that CIT enable View Restricted Data for their account.

A collaborator, even one with viewing permissions, will not be able to see the information if the survey creator doesn't have View Restricted Data enabled.
