Tips for Getting Started with Apps on Demand

The things you need to remember in order to use Apps on Demand effectively. And without losing your work.

This article applies to: Apps on Demand

  1. You can use an iPad, Android tablet, or any computer to access Apps on Demand as long as you have connection to the internet.
  2. Apps on Demand uses Amazon’s AppStream 2.0 to provide Microsoft Windows computer applications via web browser through Canvas.
  3. Apps on Demand works best with the Google Chrome Web Browser
    • We highly recommend everyone use Google Chrome (you need to allow notifications and access to your clipboard when prompted when you connect for the first time. Allowing this access will make copy and paste very easy between your computer and your Apps on Demand session).
    • Apps on Demand will also work with Firefox, Safari, Internet Explorer, and Microsoft Edge, but there are more steps to copy and paste from your computer to Apps on Demand. See our Copy and Paste with Non-Chrome Browsers article for more information.
  4. Your files are NOT automatically saved in Apps on Demand. It is critical that, when you are done with your work, you move your files to OneDrive or local storage. Anything left in Temporary Drive or Temporary Files will be lost. See our Moving Files To and From Temporary Locations article for full instructions.
  5. It will always usually take about two minutes to connect to a new Apps on Demand session. If you get a “No Streaming Resources are Available” message, it may take up to ten minutes.
  6. You can be logged into Apps on Demand for up to 10 hours a session.
  7. Disconnected sessions (closing the web browser) and idle sessions (no keyboard / mouse activity) will stay active for 60 minutes and then be automatically logged off. If you fail to reconnect or actively use your session before the 60-minute timeout ends, all your unsaved work will be lost, and you will need to start over. Be sure to save your work often to OneDrive and always before leaving your computer or doing other things on your computer.
  8. All of our Apps on Demand documentation is available on IT@Cornell.
  9. Our Apps on Demand support email address is appsondemand@cornell.edu
We will respond to tickets within one business day.
  10. During an Apps on Demand session, you can use Google Chrome from the applications list to login to your Canvas Course to access content you may need (files, instructions, etc.).
  11. Microsoft Office is not available within Apps on Demand, but you have these options:
  12. The Apps on Demand maintenance window is every Saturday from 6am until 9am. The service may unavailable during this time.
