Microsoft Copilot Icon

Over the next few weeks, expect to see the Copilot Chat icon appear in your Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and Outlook applications. Once you see this icon, you can take advantage of Copilot Chat’s abilities directly in an open file.

For those who use Microsoft Copilot Chat with the Edge browser, this workflow will feel familiar. Copilot Chat in Edge lets you work on a web page you have open (for example: “summarize this web page”). Similarly, you will be able to use Copilot Chat in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and Outlook to work on a single open document at a time.

This version of Copilot Chat offers a slimmed-down version of AI integration with the Office suite of products. Microsoft also offers “Microsoft 365 Copilot” that gives enhanced functionality, but at an additional cost.

Microsoft 365 Copilot is reaching the conclusion of a pilot program at Cornell. CIT will publish a  news announcement  once it opens to a university-wide subscription for faculty and staff.

Data Risk Considerations

This integration of Microsoft Copilot Chat within Office applications is being reviewed to assess privacy levels and data security. The AI tool can only view a file's data when you make a query in the chat tool. Therefore, you control what data Copilot Chat can see.

For now, use this integrated Copilot Chat as you would the web-based version of Copilot. When you click on the Copilot icon in your open document, make sure that document contains only low-risk data.
