When you receive notification that it's time to update your password, save yourself time and trouble by following a few best practices.
Before Updating Your Password
- Give yourself plenty of time. Don't try to update your password five minutes before a class, presentation, or important meeting.
- Set a recovery email address. A recovery email will help you get back into your account without needing assistance from the helpdesk.
- If you are on campus, connect to eduroam.
- If you are off campus, connect to CU VPN.
Connecting to eduroam or CU VPN will ensure that the password change has a chance to flow through Cornell's systems. If you update your password without being connected, the new password won't sync to all of your accounts.
After Updating Your Password
- Leave at least an hour before trying to access any NetID related services, such as logging into Outlook or Zoom. The password change needs time to flow through Cornell's systems.
- After the password change, you will need to sign in again to some services (see What Happens After a NetID Password Change)
