What Happens After a NetID Password Change

When you change your NetID password, you'll see messages and be asked to sign in again in certain locations.

Immediately or very soon after the change

  • You'll receive a confirmation email. It is for your awareness only, and you will not need to take any action from the email.
  • If you use Microsoft Teams, it will ask you to sign in again with your new password.
  • If you use Microsoft Outlook, it may also prompt you to sign in.
  • If you have Teams or Outlook on your phone, those apps may prompt you to sign in.

Windows

Face recognition or PIN may stop working temporarily.

  • Sign in once with your new password
  • They should work again afterward

You may see a message about a Work or School Account issue.

  • Signing in with your new password fixes it

Desktop applications from Microsoft, such as Outlook and OneDrive, may prompt you to sign in again to use them. If you use Teams, it may prompt you to sign in again, even during a meeting (the meeting usually continues).

macOS

If you have a Cornell-managed Mac, Self Service+ / Jamf may ask to sync your password. You may be prompted for:

  • Your new password
  • Then your old password

Desktop applications from Microsoft, such as Outlook and OneDrive, may prompt you to sign in again to use them. If you use Teams, it may prompt you to sign in again, even during a meeting (the meeting usually continues).

About ten minutes to an hour after the change

Wi‑Fi (eduroam) may keep working at first, then later ask for your new password.

This often happens after:

  • Switching networks
  • Turning Wi‑Fi off/on
  • Locking and unlocking your device

Your phone may prompt later than your computer.

Usually Unaffected (or Delayed Until Next Use)

  • Zoom
  • RingCentral
  • Browsers that already signed in
  • Some admin or internal tools

These may prompt the next time you open them, not right away.
