About the Recovery Email Address

Previously, Cornell’s process for resetting a forgotten NetID email password required users to contact the IT Service Desk and establish their identity with several forms of ID, or to answer a series of security questions only the user would know.

Going forward, users can reset their NetID account password with a recovery email address.

Setting a recovery email address lets you receive an email with a special link to reset your Cornell NetID password when you have lost or forgotten your password, without needing to contact the Cornell IT Service Desk.

Set a Recovery Email Address

A recovery email address should be one that you use regularly, but it must NOT be your Cornell NetID email address. Make sure you use a non-Cornell account that only you have access to.

The security questions method will continue to work until you set up a recovery email address. Afterward, however, you'll use your recovery email address to reset a forgotten Cornell NetID password, and the older security question method will be deactivated for you.

To set your recovery email:

  1. Go to Manage Your NetID.
  2. Click Set Your Recovery Email Address.
  3. Follow the instructions on the webpage.
