Tableau Reporting Tool

This article applies to: Enterprise Data Services

On This Page

Tableau is one of two high-end reporting tools provided centrally at Cornell. Oracle Analytics Server (OAS) is the other.

Typically, Tableau reports are prepared by colleges and units. OAS dashboards and reports are prepared by the Enterprise Data Services team. However, there are some exceptions in either direction, and training is available for colleges and units who would like to work with OAS . For new requirements, please contact the CIT Analytics and Reporting team, who will assist you in determining the best solution to meet your specific needs.

Benefits

Tableau is easy-to-use business intelligence software used for data analysis and data visualization. It has a simple drag and drop interface for building queries and allows the user to write custom SQL to answer data questions. There are a variety of graphical options and very strong mapping capabilities. Visualizations are created using Tableau Desktop and are published via Tableau Server.

Users at Cornell

Tableau dashboards and reports exist in most campus units and Tableau is used to prepare metrics published on the University Factbook web pages.

Licensing

CIT's Enterprise Data Services team administers and maintains Tableau Server. We do not manage Tableau Desktop licenses. After completing new development, report publishers often share Tableau Desktop licenses. Cornell staff(*) who are interested in Tableau Desktop are eligible to try it for free for two weeks by downloading a copy from Tableau. Cornell staff(*) who want to purchase or share an existing license can contact Cindy Sedlacek.

(*) Cornell students and instructors are eligible for Tableau Software’s academic programs, which provide free licenses for Tableau Desktop
