Web Accessibility Trainings

A list of internal and external web accessibility training available to Cornell faculty, staff, and students.

This article applies to: Web Accessibility

Internal Offerings

The Custom Development Web Accessibility team offers a range of in-house instructor-led training. Training sessions range from 1 to 2 hours and include topics such as:

  • Web Accessibility Basics: an overview that covers different disabilities and assistive technologies, US laws related to web accessibility, and the current international accessibility standard, WCAG 2.2.
  • Web Accessibility at Cornell University: an overview of the web accessibility requirements, responsibilities, and processes at Cornell.
  • Vetting Vended Products for Web Accessibility: basic web accessibility screening methods you can use when choosing products.
  • Accessibility for Content Contributors: a webinar focused on accessibility considerations for content creators who do not have control over page templates or underlying code.
  • Web Accessibility Testing: information and resources for performing accessibility testing using automated tools like Siteimprove and an introduction to methods for testing aspects of accessibility that cannot accurately be checked with automated tools, including keyboard and screen reader testing. This training is often divided into two separate sessions.
  • Multimedia Accessibility: a deeper dive into making time-based media--including audio-only, video-only, and synchronized media (what we usually term “videos”)--accessible. There is also a more focused version of this training that addresses only synchronized media.
  • Web Accessibility Deep Dive: Keyboard Testing: A webinar focuses on the importance of keyboard functionality to web accessibility support and demonstrates methods for testing keyboard functionality.

Please contact the Web Accessibility team if you'd like to request a training session for any of the topics above, or if there is a more targeted training in which you are interested.

Custom Development also has a monthly Office Hour open to anyone with questions about web accessibility, web design, UX, and front-end web development; see the Current IT Workshops and Classes page for upcoming dates.

External Offerings

Cornell faculty, staff, and students also have access to a range of external training resources:

  • Deque University: Deque is a well-established and trusted web accessibility services company; their Deque University training resource is thorough, up-to-date, and offers courses to suit every role. If you're interested in web accessibility certifications such as the CPACC or WAS, Deque University has specific course tracks aimed at preparation for the certification exams. Cornell faculty, staff, and students have access to Deque University's Full Curriculum through the SUNY All-Access account. Please contact the Web Accessibility team to be added to the Cornell group.
  • Siteimprove Frontier: Siteimprove's Frontier training catalog provides training on Siteimprove modules as well as on larger topics related to those modules. Log into Siteimprove and use the Help select menu to access Frontier.
  • Skillsoft: Skillsoft has a wide range of resources focused on Web Accessibility. The Web Accessibility team recommends sorting resources by "Newest" as web accessibility information does change along with other technologies. Log into Skillsoft and contact the Web Accessibility team if you need to confirm the reliability of resources you find.
  • LinkedIn Learning: Cornell users also have access to LinkedIn Learning. In particular, LinkedIn Learning is the "home" for accessible PDF training from the PDF expert Chad Chelius. Like Skillsoft, the range of available resources is broad, and some may be outdated. Log into LinkedIn Learning and contact the Web Accessibility team if you need to confirm the reliability of resources you find.
