Microsoft is retiring the Classic Teams app. Nearly all Cornell Teams users will not be affected by this change, since they have already switched to New Teams. Of the thousands of Cornell Teams users, only a few hundred are still using the Classic app.

Beginning in August 2024, CIT Collaboration Services will start writing to individuals still using Classic Teams to let them know they need to switch to New Teams, and that Classic will stop working in coming months.

Microsoft is phasing out Classic Teams for Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 first, on October 23, 2024. In August, Microsoft will start warning people using Teams on these operating systems . New Teams is not available for Windows 7, 8, and 8.1, so if they can’t upgrade to a more current version of Windows, it may be necessary to identify a current browser which will run the web version of New Teams.

At Cornell, the Classic Teams app will stop working for all other operating systems and browsers on January 16, 2025. Remaining Classic Teams app users will be emailed reminders as the deadline approaches. For more information about making the change, see Microsoft’s Switch to the new Microsoft Teams.
