Data Privacy Week is an international effort to empower a more secure, interconnected world. Cornell continues to be a Champion organization for 2023 to help ensure a culture of digital privacy for all. Data privacy relates to rules, guidelines, and your own personal choices about who has access to your data, and how much access they have. Stay informed about how your personal information is being used, collected, and shared online.

Everything you do online generates data. There are data about your activities, behaviors, and interests. And there’s sensitive personally identifiable information (PII), like your Social Security number, driver’s license number, and medical records. Your personal information is like currency. Value it. Protect it. Find out how to manage and safeguard your digital footprint.

Take these steps now to own your online presence:

  • Understand the privacy/convenience trade-off. Make informed decisions about whether or not to share your data with certain organizations. Be thoughtful about who gets your information, and be wary of apps or services that require access to information that is not relevant or required for the services they offer.
  • Manage your privacy. Check the privacy and security settings on web services and apps and set them to your comfort level for information sharing.
  • Protect your personal information, connected devices, and university data with Two-Step Login (Duo).

Be #PrivacyAware. Join the National Cybersecurity Alliance and LinkedIn for Data: The Story of You on January 24, 2023, at 12 noon ET.
