home page for the Cornell Experience Modernization Initiative project

A new website provides details about the Cornell Experience Modernization Initiative (CEMI), an assessment that spans all university campuses, including Ithaca, Cornell Tech in New York City, Weill Cornell Medicine in New York City and Qatar, Cornell AgriTech in Geneva, New York, and off-campus sites around the world.

In a September 9, 2024 news article announcing the new CEMI website, Chief Information Officer at Weill Cornell Medicine Vipin Kamath said, "We have a unique opportunity to rethink how we can operate more efficiently. With CEMI, we will modernize workflows, provide better tools, and enable smarter, data-driven decisions. I’m confident CEMI will significantly reduce barriers for our faculty, students, and staff, fostering deeper engagement with our core missions.”

First described in a July 2024 Wireside chat by Chief Global Information Officer Curtis Cole, the evaluation of broadly used software focuses on the university's IT environment, which Cole said is characterized by high technical debt, duplication of systems, and a highly distributed structure, presenting the Cornell community with a very painful user experience.

Cole believes modernizing the Cornell digital experience extends beyond a technology upgrade. He said, "A new, more integrated system, on its own, can deliver some better data and more unified processes. But the system is fundamentally just an enabler to make it easier to work across units. Throughout this initiative, we hope to deliver new methods for teams to work together to create a better experience for all students, faculty, staff, alumni, donors, patients, and partners. Updating the technology is a need, but improving the experience is the goal."
