The Software Development Special Interest Group (SD-SIG) invites the Cornell developer community to its next Developer Excellence Workshop on Thursday, December 18, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. In this virtual session, dive into one of Cornell's most complex and diverse technical domains: the Veterinary Medicine (VM).

The VMIT group supports over 150 client-facing products and 100 more integrations supporting the Cornell University Hospital for Animals, the Animal Health Diagnostic Center (AHDC), research platforms, and educational tools.

This talk outlines CVM's practical, grounded strategy for integrating AI into this diverse ecosystem, moving from initial hype to sustainable, long-term value.

Why This Matters to the SIG

This isn't just a talk about AI; it's an enterprise integration case study. The challenges we face—data security, diverse user bases, and integrating with existing systems—are common to many of Cornell's IT professionals. This session provides a real-world example of:

  • Pragmatic AI Adoption: Building a strategy that leverages managed services (Bedrock) and open-source models to avoid vendor lock-in.
  • DevOps for AI: Applying familiar CI/CD principles (GitHub Actions) and container orchestration (Kubernetes) to a new class of applications.
  • Code first tools: We chose to stay close to our expertise and implemented code first tools, such as Strands agents.

Access the Zoom link, full agenda, or add an ICS file to add this event to your calendar on the SD-SIG meeting page (sign-in required) and learn more about the group there as well.
