Cornell Information Technologies (CIT) is transitioning its Slack workspaces to Microsoft Teams on January 23, 2026. Previously announced in October, the move helps streamline communication across the organization and supports the university’s broader cost-savings goals reflected in Resilient Cornell.
Consolidating communication tools within Microsoft Teams also reinforces the modernization theme, “as common as possible, as different as absolutely necessary” by leaning into existing tools already supporting unified yet flexible, reliable work environments.
As of January 23, CIT Slack workspaces will transition to a free version. The free version of Slack is not linked to Single Sign-on, has a limited message and file history of 90 days, and may hide or permanently delete content older than 90 days. Team members still using Slack for CIT-related projects can find transition resources in the October announcement.
