Mass Communication and Marketing Project Update - August 2023

This article applies to: Marketing Cloud

Campus partners,

We are writing to update you on progress that has been made implementing Marketing Cloud at Cornell. The project continues to proceed with notable successes. Phase 2 accomplishments have included successful implementations for University Relations (UR) and Alumni Affairs and Development (AAD) and the launch of the platform in HR and Student and Campus Life.

Where We Are

As you’re aware, the project is committed to multi-year implementation and roll-out phases that are dependent upon and learn from the lessons of previous phases. This approach has worked well so far. Our experience with UR and AAD has provided a solid foundation to bring the Marketing Cloud platform to a wider range of Cornell units. Since implementing Marketing Cloud, for example, AAD has sent over 6 million emails, with 4.7 million opens and 235,000 click-throughs.

Project close out for phase 2 is running slightly behind schedule. During the Marketing Cloud stabilization period, a few issues emerged that affected things such as deliverability and data integrity. These items are not a cause for alarm, but need to be addressed before the platform is rolled out more broadly to ensure the system is in the best position to move forward. We originally planned project close out for early summer, this has now shifted to early fall.

Securing Phase 3 Resources

Thank you to all those who responded to our spring survey. Your input has provided valuable guidance as the implementation moves forward.

The project’s next step is to present the current success to university leadership and deans, and gain approval for the approach, resources, and budget to accomplish Phase 3. We will share details of what Phase 3 includes and timeline after we have gained support from leadership this fall.

In Phase 3, the project will move to the onboarding of additional colleges, units, and departments. We look forward to updating you as those plans continue to take shape.
