NetID Conflicts With Claude and ChatGPT

If you created a personal Claude or ChatGPT account using your Cornell NetID you may see some unexpected messages, or experience problems logging in. Those who want to use Cornell's ChatGPT account should read the red warning box before requesting access.

At the end of 2026, the university will provide Cornell-supported access to Claude and ChatGPT. These Cornell-funded accounts will use your NetID to log in.

If you created a personal Claude or ChatGPT account with your NetID this can cause conflict.

Use Cornell Data With Cornell Accounts

ChatGPT and Claude mirrors a public subscriptions, but with enterprise security, as well as data protections and privacy through a contract negotiated specifically for the Cornell community.

If you use Claude or ChatGPT for Cornell-related business, you must use the Cornell-provided access to enjoy these protections.

I Used My NetID with a Personal Claude Account

If you previously signed up for Claude using your Cornell NetID, and use it for your personal account, you can switch back and forth between them using these instructions from Anthropic:

I have multiple accounts – how can I switch between them?

If you have both an individual Claude account and a Team or Enterprise plan account tied to the same email address, follow these steps to switch to your other account:

  1. Click your initials in the bottom left corner.
  2. Select the desired account.
  3. Look for the check mark indicating the active account.

Claude does not offer a way to move chats from one account to another. It will allow you to export your chat history, or you can migrate your account to the Cornell enterprise account. Migrating the account involves closing the original account (with a pro-rated refund).

I Used My NetID with a Personal ChatGPT Account

If you have a personal ChatGPT account that uses your Cornell NetID email, you will be prompted to merge your personal account with your Cornell account. This is not always appropriate or desired.

If you do not wish to merge accounts, you will need to change your email address on your personal ChatGPT account before you complete the AI literacy training.

To change your email address on your personal ChatGPT account:

  1. Log in to ChatGPT on the web.
  2. Click on your name in the lower left of the window.
  3. Click Settings.
  4. Click Account.
  5. Look for the Email line and click Change.

Once you have changed the email address on your personal ChatGPT account, continue registering for your Cornell-based ChatGPT Edu account.

If you have used your ChatGPT account for Cornell-related work, then elect the merge option for better data security. You will be issued a prorated refund for your personal ChatGPT account.

If you have a personal account that you do not want to merge with the Cornell account, and you cannot access either, reach out to the AI Strategy, Enablement & Innovation team

Alumni, Retirees, and Others

If you use your NetID with Claude or ChatGPT, and you are no longer affiliated with Cornell you will notice a new sign-in option that says:

Sign in with Company SSO

SSO stands for "single sign on", which is the pathway for active Cornell individuals to access the Cornell-supported Claude and ChatGPT accounts. If you click this option, it will ask you to log in with your Cornell account using Two-Step login, and then will deny you access to the tool.

Continue to access the AI tool by signing in with your email address, and not SSO.
