Cornell University and Weill Cornell Medicine logos with microsoft teams logo between them.

At Cornell, there are two instances of Teams. One includes Ithaca and Cornell Tech, and the other includes Weill Cornell Medicine (WCM) and Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar. If you use Teams to collaborate across campuses, you may have wondered how to set up a channel that allows everyone to interact without needing to switch accounts.

When someone at Ithaca or Cornell Tech wants to work with someone at WCM or WCM-Qatar or vice versa, use a shared channel. Using shared channels will ensure the best possible Teams experience for all participants.

Whether you're already collaborating across campuses, or starting a new collaboration, use the tips below to review your team and channel configurations.

  • Collaborations with WCM and WCM-Qatar should use a shared channel.
  • When using shared channels across campuses, do not use the default General channel for intercampus conversation. It cannot be shared, so the part of the group that is outside the host team will not see it.
  • Select Other as your team type when setting up a shared channel, and use our step-by-step guide.

When working with individuals who are all within a single Cornell instance of Teams, such as between Ithaca and Cornell Tech, use a standard or private channel, depending on what you need to accomplish. Different settings are required for collaborations outside of the Cornell community.

Collaborations between WCM or WCM-Qatar and Ithaca or Cornell Tech should always use a shared channel to ensure that everyone can participate.
