A new Teams feature from Microsoft changes a multistep process to share files with external colleagues into a simple upload action right in the chat window. It works exactly like what you see now when sharing a file with another Ithaca colleague in a Team chat.

An update on Monday, May 18 makes that same streamlined process available to the Cornell community.

Starting on May 18, shared chats will see the "Attach File" button in the chat. Simply add your file, and everyone (internal and external) will immediately see it. Files shared this way display an External label to clearly indicate cross-organization content.

External files are labeled

When you upload a file to a shared chat, it will upload to your OneDrive account (if it's not already there) and create the link for external participants to access the file. Files that you upload from your computer will appear in your OneDrive account in a folder called Microsoft Teams Chat Files.

If you attach a file from OneDrive, it remains in its original location.

This change applies to Cornell Ithaca Teams members. In addition to the Cornell campuses, you can share files with others not at Cornell (for example colleagues at another institution).
