Configure the Apple iOS Mail and Calendar App for Use with Two-Step Login

How to update your cornell.edu account profile so you can use Two-Step Login for Office 365 with Apple's iOS Mail and Calendar apps on your phone or tablet.

Before you start using Two-Step Login with Apple's iOS Mail and Calendar apps, you need to update your account. You can do this in advance of enabling Two-Step Login for Office 365.

Apple frequently updates the iOS Settings options, so you should consider the steps below as a backup to Apple's own documentation about how to Set up mail, contacts, and calendar accounts.

Update Apple iOS Mail App Settings for Two-Step Login

Remove Your Existing iOS Cornell Mail (Exchange) Account

  1. From your iPhone home screen, if you use:
    • iOS 14: tap Settings, then Mail, then Accounts.
    • iOS 12 or 13: tap Settings, then Passwords & Accounts.
  2. Tap the entry for your Cornell email Exchange profile.
  3. Tap Delete Account.
You will be prompted to confirm the deletion. Although the data is being removed from your phone, your Cornell account’s Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Reminders, and Notes are saved to your Office 365 account and will sync back to your phone when you re-add the account.
  1. Tap Delete from My iPhone and, if required, enter your iPhone passcode to confirm.
  2. You will be returned to the list of your iPhone mail accounts.

Add Your Cornell Exchange Account

When configuring a Cornell Exchange account on your iPhone, you may see a warning that "Adding an Exchange account will allow the Exchange administrator to remotely manage your device. The administrator may collect personal data, add/remove accounts and restrictions, list, install, and manage apps, and remotely erase data on your device." To add your Cornell Exchange account:

  1. From your iPhone home screen, if you use:
    • iOS 14, tap Settings, then Mail, then Accounts.
    • iOS 13, tap Settings, then Passwords & Accounts.
  2. Under Accounts, tap Add Account.
  3. Tap Microsoft Exchange. (On older iOS versions, tap Exchange.)
  4. Type your full NetID Email address and a Description (this is what it will be called in your Mail Account list), then tap Next.
  5. When asked to confirm, tap Sign In.
  6. Type your password, then tap Sign In.
  7. If you have already opted in to Two-Step Login for Office 365, authenticate using Two-Step Login.
  8. Tap Save.

Known Issue: iOS Password Loop

The iOS 11 behavior described below has been reported by users who had previously configured iOS 11 with Cornell mail.

  1. The iOS 11 mail app gets caught in a password prompt loop.
  2. Entering the password results in a login error and again prompts for credentials.

To solve this problem, remove and then re-install your iPhone’s Cornell Exchange email account by following the instructions above.
