Static Web Hosting

Small, simple sites
CIT Custom Development has launched phased retirement of the current Static Web Hosting service. In preparation, no new websites will be added to the service as of July 1, 2020.

A static site uses only HTML to serve its pages, so you can use CSS, JavaScript, and server-side includes, but there are no provisions for CGI or other programming options.

Typical use? If you have a website that does not require back-end programming languages like ColdFusion or PHP, then static web hosting might be best suited for your needs.

Note: Static sites have a 1 GB quota.

Web Design Options

If you'd like assistance with web design, programming, and maintenance, the Custom Development team offers site development, maintenance, and support tasks such as design, needs analysis, Q&A, installation and updates, etc. Submit new requests to Integrated Web Services at iws-support@cornell.edu.

If you prefer to use a third-party contractor, you'll need to request a Sponsored NetID. For more information, see the Request a Sponsored NetID procedure.

Hosting Options

Media3 and static web hosting options on this page should not be used to store confidential data as defined by Cornell Policy 5.10.

Media3 Managed Web Hosting

  • What is it? Media3 is a cloud-based web hosting solution. It is ideal if you only want to worry about your website, your code, or your data. Media3 takes care of the full stack from the virtual cloud server infrastructure, OS (Linux), ColdFusion, MySQL, PHP, and Apache. They provide fully configured CUWebAuth with service IDs and keytabs. Media3 offers SSL security certificates. They also provide round the clock support for the stack.
  • Typical use? Web applications or sites with dynamic content. Supports PHP, Python, and Ruby. Can support a variety of websites and applications. Sizing and service should be taken into consideration when ordering your VM/host.
If you want to do pre-production testing in a non-production location for a site from hosting services, you have a few options. An additional vanity/virtual host or instance on your hosting VM may suffice. For additional information, or to request a test virtual host or instance, contact webservices@cornell.edu.
