Configure and Audit CIFS Audit Logs for Confidential Shares

This article applies to: Shared File Services

If you need to store HIPAA or confidential/high-risk data on SFS, you must request a properly configured share.

SFS provides the ability to review CIFS/SMB auditing in compliance with Cornell Policy 5.10Request an audit report using this form.

When your confidential share is created on SFS a second billable volume is created as a secure transfer location for audit reports. For example:

  • Requested Share: \\files.cornell.edu\CIT\Employee-Data
    Billed at our normal rates.
  • Audit Transfer Share: \\files.cornell.edu\CIT\Employee-Data-auditlog
Billed at a higher rate. Starts at 150 GB, and is automatically grown as required. We use this share for secure transfer of auditing reports. This share is not to be used for any other purpose.

For HIPAA data there are additional requirements to be met by you, the Technical Support Provider.
