LastPass for Families

You and your family can protect your passwords, share sensitive information confidentially, and easily access your passwords across multiple devices.

This article applies to: Secure Password Management

On This Page

LastPass Families allows Cornell LastPass users to extend the same benefits and protections to up to five additional family members or friends for free. (LastPass Families is otherwise a for-fee service.) The LastPass Families license is granted to your personal account, not to your Cornell account, and personal data is not shared with Cornell. Read more about the protections and benefits LastPass offers at our LastPass overview.

To Start Using LastPass Families

First activate your LastPass Families as a Benefit Account. Since this is a benefit of your Cornell affiliation, you will need to link your personal LastPass account to your Cornell LastPass account.

  1. Log in to LastPass with your Cornell account and access your vault by doing either of the following:
    • In your web browser toolbar, click the LastPass icon active LastPass icon and select Open My Vault.
    • Go to LastPass and log in with your email address and master password.
  2. Click Account Benefits in the left-hand navigation.
  3. Click Activate LastPass Families for Free.
  4. Follow the instructions that follow. (You will need to provide your personal LastPass account—or create one—to claim the benefit.) You will receive an email with an activation link to complete the process.
For detailed instructions from LastPass, read the "Using LastPass Families" documenation at LastPass.

Add a Family Member

Once you have activated your Families account, you will become the "family manager" in LastPass. To add individuals to your LastPass Families account:

  1. Log in to your personal LastPass account and access your vault by doing either of the following:
    • In your web browser toolbar, click the LastPass icon active LastPass icon and select Open My Vault.
    • Go to LastPass and log in with your email address and master password.
  2. Click Manage Family in the left navigation.
  3. Click Add Family Member in the top navigation (you may need to log in again).
  4. Enter the email address, first name, and last name of the Family Member you want to add.
  5. Click Add Family Member to send an email invitation to the Family Member. If this individual does not already have a LastPass account, they will receive instructions on creating one.

Once the family member accepts the invitation, they will be able to manage and share passwords to more than one email address. To learn about sharing passwords, notes, and folders in LastPass, start with the LastPass instructions.

For detailed instructions from LastPass about adding a family member, read the "Add a Family Member" documentation at LastPass.

Remove a Family Member

Removing a family member from your account converts their LastPass to a Free subscription (unless they upgrade to Premium). The individual retains their own account and passwords, but can no longer access shared folders in your Families account.

To remove individuals from your LastPass Families account:

  3. Select the name of the family member you want to remove.
  4. Click Remove from Family.
  5. Click Yes to confirm.
For detailed instructions from LastPass, read the "Remove a Family Member" documentation at LastPass.
