Cornell Information Technologies (CIT) has 10 paid internships available for qualified undergraduate students through the Alliance for Diversity and Inclusion (ADI) Summer Intern Program. In addition to 30–40 hours of work per week, interns participate in a series of on-campus events designed to help them learn about how Cornell departments function and gain valuable work and networking skills applicable to their future careers.
The internships last for eight weeks and pay $18 per hour. CIT interns will work remotely and are expected to engage in regular group interactions with their peers and in weekly program luncheons that feature guest speakers from Cornell’s administration. Systems Analyst
The Systems Analyst will work in Cloud and Infrastructure Services to analyze the configuration and tracking systems used across our portfolio of services, identify common processes and gaps, and design data models and workflows that could support a common approach to service support. This will involve interviewing managers and technical staff to understand workflow requirements and reviewing technical tools to understand existing data structures.
Requirements: Strong analytical thinker with excellent written communication skills. Basic technical understanding of databases, programming, and workflow concepts required. Background in computer science, engineering, or a related discipline is preferred but not essential. Familiarity with data or workflow modeling tools is a plus.
Writing and Graphic Design (2 Opportunities)
As an IT Communication intern, you can expect to be involved in tasks like these, depending on the skills you offer:
- Develop marketing materials and communications for a student audience to raise awareness of Cornell's IT services and major projects.
- Design images and content on our communication channels (e.g., websites, Twitter, Facebook, knowledge management system, e-lists).
- Write step-by-step documentation or record videos to explain how to use the features of Cornell's IT services.
- Write news articles highlighting interesting ways that IT services are being used at Cornell.
- Develop marketing plans for IT services.
- Provide analytics and metrics of our social media channels.
- Develop infographics and charts to show how the campus uses IT services.
- Take and edit IT-related photos.
- Create simple, short promotional videos.
- Assist in planning special events.
Requirements: A self-starter with an interest in creating short videos, images, and graphics-related marketing materials. Interest in best practices and trends in communication, marketing, graphic design, and social media. Demonstrated strength and interest in writing, analysis, research/reporting, oral communication, editing, and proofreading. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Knowledge of content management systems (or a willingness to learn), InDesign, and Photoshop are a plus. Interest in working collaboratively with other interns and with the CIT Customer Experience team. Ability to work with a minimum of direct supervision, meet deadlines, and find creative ways to visually represent IT@Cornell.
Business Analyst
Interested in learning what it is like working within a full project management office? CIT’s Project Management Office (PMO) leads large-scale, strategic projects across campus including the identification of business needs and determining solutions to business problems. The office is also responsible for central IT Governance. The Business Analyst intern will assist senior business analysts, project managers, and PMO leadership in efforts to update business analysis (BA) documentation, develop BA and testing deliverables and provide individual support to senior business analysts. Attend meetings with project managers and business analysts as assigned to listen and document key meeting discussions, decisions, and next steps. Assist with tracking and forecasting BA and testing efforts as assigned.
Requirements: Excellent oral and written communication skills. Great with details and documentation. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to work with a minimum of direct supervision, plan work and meet deadlines. Previous experience or coursework in information technology, business, or a related field. Basic knowledge, through coursework or experience, of the software development lifecycle, and knowledge of project management and business analysis methodologies is a plus. Ability to work 30–39 hours per week during the summer program. Ability to interact with mentors and peers in a manner that supports collaboration and inquiry.
Project Coordinator (4 opportunities)
Interested in learning what it is like working within a full project management office? CIT’s Project Management Office (PMO) leads large-scale, strategic projects across campus. The office is also responsible for central IT Governance. The Project Coordinator intern will assist project managers and the PMO leadership in efforts to update team documentation, coordinate enterprise initiatives with campus-wide impact, and provide individual project support to project managers. Attend meetings with project managers as assigned to listen and document key meeting discussions, decisions, and next steps. Assist with project tracking and forecasting as assigned.

Ability to work with a minimum of direct supervision, plan work and meet deadlines. Previous experience or coursework in information technology, business, or a related field. Basic knowledge, through coursework or experience, of the software development lifecycle, and knowledge of project management and business analysis methodologies is a plus. Service Continuity Analyst
Working closely with the IT Service Management team, this position will assist with business continuity and disaster recovery processes used by our central IT organization. The internship will cover the basics required for understanding the practice of emergency preparedness, and how a service management program enables a large organization to maintain and keep up to date important documents such as on-call lists, disaster recovery (DR) plans, essential lists of services, and applications. Intern will assist in coordinating the annual DR Refresh. The intern will perform data analysis on support tickets related to major incidents and emergencies to further expand the use of custom forms, automation, and workflow in the service management suite.
Requirements: Familiarity with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Experience with managing and interpreting data. Previous coursework related to data analytics, operations management, technical writing, and business. Solid interpersonal skills, strong quantitative, analytical, and problem-solving skills; a self-starter, able to plan and move forward towards deadlines without the need for micromanagement.
Preferred: Familiarity with IT Service Management, desire to gain leadership/management experience. Six Sigma concepts and ITIL Foundation certification is desired but not required.
Service Portfolio Analyst
Working closely with the IT Service Management team, this position will assist with service contracts, service portfolio, and service catalog management practices. The internship will cover the basics required for understanding a large service management program and coordinating updates to service information. Intern will assist with the annual service review, assist with updates to service contracts, service portfolio, and the IT@Cornell website. The intern will perform data analysis on support tickets related to support of services to further expand the use of custom forms, automation, and workflow in the service management suite.
