Microsoft patch causes Excel download issues with some commercial applications (PeopleSoft, Jira, Kronos)

A recent Microsoft Office patch intended to make Excel on the desktop more secure causes issues with applications that use Excel spreadsheets to download. Reported issues have included Commercial Applications such as Kronos, PeopleSoft, and Jira.

To fix the problem, users must add the sites, such as Kronos, PeopleSoft, and Jira, to Internet Explorer’s (IE) “Trusted” sites, regardless of whether they are using IE or an alternate browser like Firefox or Chrome. Microsoft Office applications look to IE’s “trusted” sites for a list of sites to allow content from, and this can include sites accessed with alternate browsers. Users can continue to use alternate browsers after adding to the “trusted” sites in IE.

To add a site to IE's "trusted" sites:

  1. Launch IE if it is not already running.

  2. Click on the “Tools” icon (usually a gear on the right side).

  3. Select “Internet Options.”

  4. Select the “Security” tab.

  5. Click “Trusted sites.”

  6. Click “Sites.”

  7. Under “Add this website to the zone,” enter the site used by the app. (For example, jira.cornell.edu or kronos.cornell.edu.)  If you are already on the site you want to add, IE will try to autopopulate this field.

  8. Click “Add,” then “Close.”

The process should now work in any browser.
