Change to Download Feature May Impact Previously Uploaded Media in Video on Demand
Related services: Video on Demand
By user request on Sunday, July 30, 2017, we are broadening the options available to let owners allow others to download copies of their media from the Video on Demand (VOD) site. While we feel this will increase the overall utility of this feature and will be implementing changes specifically requested by our users, the change may impact users who had already found and enabled the download feature.
Previously, the VOD service included a download option that allowed only owners the option to download a copy of their own media from the VOD site. If users had enabled this download feature, which previously only allowed the owner of the content to download their media, the change may expose some media previously enabled for download to be downloadable by all viewers, not just the owner.
If users had not previously enabled the download feature on any of their media, they do not need to take any action. They can find documentation on how to make their media available for download at: it.cornell.edu/vod/share-your-media#section-4.
If users previously enabled the download feature, they will want to check their publishing status before Sunday, July 30, 2017, as the impact of this change will depend on their media's publishing status.
- If the publishing status of a user’s media is set to “Private,” there will be no direct impact from this change.
- If the publishing status of a user’s media is set to “Unlisted,” this will mean that anyone with a link to the video will be able to download it.
- If the publishing status of a user’s media is set to “Published,” then anyone with access to the VOD channel where the media is published will be able to download it. By default, this will be any member of the Cornell community with a NetID and password. However, if users have created a more restricted channel, then only users who have access to view that channel will be able to download content.
If users are unsure of their media’s published status, they can follow the instructions on: it.cornell.edu/vod/share-your-media#section-1.
