Restart a Windows Server

This article applies to: Managed Servers

On This Page

Every time a Windows server is started (rebooted or restarted), the area manager, technical contacts, and watchers for that server are notified by email. See sample below.

Need Help Before Restart

  • If your Windows server needs to be restarted, and you would like assistance diagnosing the problem before you reboot it:
    • Non-Urgent: Send e-mail to systems-support@cornell.edu.
    • Urgent: Send e-mail to systems-support@cornell.edu. Use "Urgent:" as the first word of the Subject line. (Email is monitored during normal business hours only.)
    • Very Urgent and Urgent outside normal business hours: Follow procedure for Urgent, and then call the IT Service Desk at (607) 255-5500 and ask to speak to the Windows sysadmin on call. The sysadmin will call you back as soon as possible.

Restart without Help

  • If your server needs to be rebooted and you don't need help diagnosing the problem, restart your server.
    • A notification email will be sent to both the area manager and the technical contact for the server. The notification email lists the last start for the server. Check the time stamp in the email for clarification about when the server start took place. To verify the contacts for a server, see the Verify Contacts procedure.
    • When you shut down the server using a standard method (not a crash or power loss), monitoring is suspended for 30 minutes. This means a monitoring alert will not occur for this restart.

Sample Reboot Message

The first line is the most recent reboot. The message also includes the two previous user-initiated shutdowns.
