Restart a Unix Server

This article applies to: Managed Servers

On This Page

Every time a Unix (Linux or Solaris) server is started (rebooted or restarted), the area manager, technical contacts, and watchers for that server are notified by email. See sample notification message listed below.

Need Help Before Restart

  • If your server needs to be restarted, and you would like assistance diagnosing the problem before you reboot it:
    • Non-Urgent: Send e-mail to systems-support@cornell.edu.
    • Urgent: Send e-mail to systems-support@cornell.edu. Use “Urgent:” as the first word of the Subject line. (Email is monitored during normal business hours only.)
    • Very Urgent and Urgent outside normal business hours: Follow procedure for Urgent, and then call the IT Service Desk at (607) 255-5500 and ask to speak to the Unix sysadmin on call. The sysadmin will call you back as soon as possible.

Restart without Help

If your server needs to be rebooted and you don't need help diagnosing the problem, restart your server.

  1. Log into the server via Secure Shell (SSH).
    • If you have problems logging into your server with Secure Shell (SSH), see the section above on obtaining assistance.
  2. Run the command:
    sudo /opt/common/sbin/reboot-host
    • When you use the above command to restart the server, monitoring is suspended for 30 minutes. This means a monitoring alert will not occur for this restart.
    • You will be prompted to specify a reason for this reboot. This reason will be included in the email sent to the contacts following the reboot.
    • If you have problems restarting your server with this command, see the section above on obtaining assistance.
  3. A notification email will be sent to the area manager, technical contacts and watchers for the server. To verify the contacts for a server, see the Verify Contacts procedure.
