Add Multiple E-list Members by Importing (Lyris)

This article applies to: E-lists (Lyris)

By importing a file of addresses, you can use the Lyris web interface to add many people to a list all at once.

Although there are other options, we strongly recommend using a CSV file (comma separated values). Most spreadsheet apps (like Excel) can create this kind of file.

Prepare Your CSV File of Addresses

  1. Open a blank spreadsheet.
  2. In the first cell of the first column, enter EMAILADDR_
including the underscore at the end.
  3. In the column immediately below EMAILADDR_, enter one email address per cell.
  4. (Optional) If you want to include names, follow these lettered steps
    1. In the first cell of the second column, enter FULLNAME_
including the underscore at the end.
    2. In the column immediate below FULLNAME_, enter the name that matches the email address on that row.
If a name includes commas, periods, or single quotes, enclose the entire name in double quotes.
For example, "Smith, Fred" or "John Q. Public"
Avoid using accents and other symbols in names.
  5. Save as a CSV file.
In Excel for Windows, select CSV (MS-DOS) as the file type.
In Excel for Mac, select Comma Separated Values as the file type.

Upload Your File of Addresses

  1. Log in to the Lyris administrator web interface.
    - How do I log in?
    - Take me to the login page.
  2. On the left, click Members.
  3. Hover over Add Members. A sub-menu will open.
  4. Select Import from CSV File.
  5. For Action, select Import quietly as regular members. This choice means that the people specified in your file will be added as members without asking them to confirm their desire to be members, and without sending them the "hello" message associated with this list.
  6. For Update existing members, no means that if an address is already a member, that record will not be updated. Yes means that the record will be updated with the name in the file (if you included names) and the member's status will be set to "Normal."
  7. Click Browse to select the text file containing the new member information as described above.
  8. Click Import.
  9. You will see an Import Status screen. When the import is completed (it is typically quite fast), click OK at the bottom of the screen.
