Problem: Legitimate Email Message Gets Tagged as Spam

Situation

A message - sent through Cornell's Office 365 or Cornell's Google Workspace - has been tagged as spam or junk by the recipient's email app.

Solution

The recipient can tell their email application to recognize as valid messages from the sender. Below are listed the steps the recipient can take in IT@Cornell-supported email applications.

Google

  1. Open the Spam folder.
  2. Right-click the message.
  3. Click Not spam.

Outlook

  1. Open Outlook on the web.
  2. Open the Junk Email folder.
  3. Right-click the message.
  4. Click Report, then click Not junk.

In Outlook on the web, while in either the Inbox or Junk Email folder, you can also right-click a message, click Block, then select Never block sender to prevent future messages from this sender being marked as spam.

If the message was sent from a service other than Cornell Office 365 or Cornell Google Workspace, the sender could take their concerns to the provider of that mail service. Cornell has no control or influence over other service providers.
