Define Departments, Buildings, and Network Segments (Endpoint Management Tools - Mac)

This article applies to: Endpoint Management Tools

This page is intended for IT support professionals. End users should contact local IT support.

Buildings & Departments Overview

Buildings and departments provide ways to organize your inventory with more granular control for scoping tasks in the JSS. For example, imagine that you have to upgrade all of your computers to Office 2011. If your department was spread out across two buildings, you may opt to just have the upgrade occur in one building at a time to reduce the probability that you'll need to be in two places at one time. Therefore you can scope your software install in one building in the morning and another building in the afternoon. You can also use Buildings and Departments together to narrow the scope even more.

Network Segments Overview

Network Segments are useful when you want management tasks to occur only when a computer is on a certain network. For example, if you have a large software package of several gigabytes to send out (for example, Adobe Creative Suite) then you may want to only send that software package out when the computer is on the wired network in their office but not on WiFi. This is useful in preventing unexpected behavior if a user is traveling with their laptop. You can assign Network Segments to Departments and Buildings as well. Network Segments are dynamically assigned to computers in real time as they connect to different networks.
