Update Software


Without up-to-date software, the average unprotected computer connected to the Internet can be compromised in less than a minute. The single most important step to securing your computer is to install updates to key software packages. This includes your operating system, web browser, email program, all other applications that connect to the network, and Microsoft Office.

Configure your computer to run automatic updates daily

Turn on Automatic Updates for Firefox

Automatic updating is turned on in Firefox by default. To be sure your browser is set for automatic updates, check the Preferences.

  1. On the Firefox menu, click Preferences.
  2. Click Advanced.
  3. Click the Update tab.
  4. Place a check in the box for Automatically check for updates to:
    • Firefox
    • Installed Add-ons
    • Search Engines
  5. Under When updates to Firefox are found, turn on:
    • Automatically download and install the update
    • Warn me if this will disable any of my add-ons

Turn on Automatic Updates for Internet Explorer and Safari

Internet Explorer and Safari can both be automatically updated using the Software Update feature for the Windows or Mac OS X operating systems.

  1. From the Apple menu, select System Preferences, and then click Software Update.
  2. Check Automatically check for updates.
