Set Up Apple Mail (OS X 10.9 or 10.10) for Your Cmail Account

This article applies to: Apple Mail, Cmail: Email for Students


Use this procedure only if you have

  • Mac OS X 10.9 (Mavericks)

OR

  • Mac OS X 10.10 (Yosemite).

Preparation step: Turn on IMAP access in Cmail. The steps below will not work correctly until IMAP has been enabled in the Cmail account.

  1. Run Mail.
  2. From the Mail menu, choose Preferences.
  3. In the dialog box that opens, click Accounts.
  4. Click the plus-sign in the lower-left corner of the dialog box.
  5. On the Choose a mail account to add pop-up, select Add Other Mail Account, then click Continue.
    For OS X 10.10, you'll click Add Other Account.
    Do NOT select "Google."
  6. In the Add a Mail Account dialog box, enter your name, your netid@cornell.edu email address, and the password you use with your NetID.
  7. Click Create.
  8. In the Incoming Mail Server Info dialog box,
    1. For Account Type, click IMAP.
    2. For Mail Server, enter imap.gmail.com
    3. For User Name, enter your netid@cornell.edu address.
      This field will probably show your NetID. Be sure to edit it to your full netid@cornell.edu email address.
    4. For Password, enter the password you use with your NetID.
    5. Click Next.
  9. In the second Incoming Mail Server Info dialog box (shown below), no changes are needed. Just click Next.
  10. In the Outgoing Mail Server Info dialog box, for SMTP Server, enter smtp.gmail.com
  11. For User Name, enter your netid@cornell.edu address.
  12. For Password, enter the password you use with your NetID.
  13. Click Create.
