Set Up Apple Mail (OS X 10.11 or macOS 10.12) for Your Cmail Account

This article applies to: Apple Mail, Cmail: Email for Students


You Used Apple Mail to Read Cmail in the Past, and Have Now Upgraded to OS X 10.11 or macOS 10.12

Use this procedure ONLY if you 

  • already had Apple Mail set up to read your Cmail account
    AND
  • then upgraded your operating system to OS X 10.11 (El Capitan) or macOS 10.12 (Sierra)
  1. Close Apple Mail.
  2. Open your Mac's System Preferences.
  3. Click Internet Accounts.
  4. On the left, select your Cmail account, then click the minus sign near the bottom-left corner of the Internet Accounts dialog box.
  5. Click Google.
  6. Follow the prompts to add your Cmail account. You will need your address (NetID@cornell.edu) and the associated password.
  7. Close the Internet Accounts dialog box.
  8. Open Apple Mail.
  9. Test for sending/receiving/syncing.

You Have OS X 10.11 or macOS 10.12 and Have Not Used Apple Mail to Read Cmail on This Mac

Use this procedure ONLY if you

  • have OS X 10.11 (El Capitan) or macOS 10.12 (Sierra)
    AND
  • you are setting up Apple Mail to read your Cmail account for the first time on this computer

Preparation step: Turn on IMAP access in Cmail. The steps below will not work correctly until IMAP has been enabled in the Cmail account.

  1. Close Apple Mail.
  2. Open your Mac's System Preferences.
  3. Click Internet Accounts.
  4. Click Google.
  5. Follow the prompts to add your Cmail account. You will need your address (NetID@cornell.edu) and the associated password.
  6. Close the Internet Accounts dialog box.
  7. Open Apple Mail.
  8. Test for sending/receiving/syncing.
