Installation Instructions for Storage Protect Client v8.1 for

Windows 11 (except mobile) (for IBM Storage Protect v8.1.13 and higher)

Windows 10 (except mobile)

Windows Server 2022 Core (for Storage Protect 8.1.13 and higher)

If you have an earlier version of the backup client installed, please use our Upgrade instructions instead of these instructions.

This procedure requires that the computer is registered with the EZ-Backup service. If this computer is not yet registered, please go to the EZ-Backup Subscription Page.

Before You Begin the Installation

Locate your copy of the email confirming your subscription that contains:

  • TSM Node Name
  • Initial Password
  • TSM TCP Server Address
  • TSM TCP Port Address

Review the README file for important information about system requirements, fixes, features, and known problems with this release.

Your system may restart automatically one or more times during the installation process. Be sure to save your work and close all applications before proceeding.

Download the Installer

  1. Log into Windows using an account with FULL ADMINISTRATOR PRIVILEGES.
  2. Download the 64-bit SP v8.1 installer to your computer.

Run the Installer

  1. Close your browser and any other open applications.
  2. Locate the directory with the installer you downloaded above.
  3. Right-click the installer, then select Run as administrator. (This is necessary, even though you are logged on using system admin credentials.)
  4. Click Next to accept the default directory location for the uncompressed files. ( TSMCL_WIN\tsm_images\TSM_BA_Client ). If the installer detects files from an earlier version in this directory, you will be prompted to confirm you want to overwrite the old files. If you see this prompt, select Yes to All.
  5. Navigate to the TSMCL_WIN directory.
  6. Right-click spinstall (or spinstall.exe), then select Run as administrator.
  7. In the IBM Storage Protect Client - InstallShields Wizard window that opens,
    1. Select English, then click OK.
    2. If the installer indicates that one or more Microsoft C++ redistributable files must be installed, click Install.
    3. On the Welcome screen, click Next.
    4. Click Next to accept the default installation directory. ( C:\Program Files\Tivoli\TSM )
    5. For Installation Type, select Typical, then click Next.
    6. Click Install.
  8. When the installer completes the installation, click Finish to close the wizard.

Verify the Installation

Click the Start menu, then scroll down the Apps list to the IBM Storage Protect folder. It should have a "New" designation. Click the down arrow; you should see both the Backup-Archive Command Line and the Backup-Archive GUI listed there.

Configure the Client Software

If your department has its own configuration file, follow the procedure for using that file instead of the procedure listed here, then continue with the next section, Configure Automatic Backups.

  1. Download the EZ-Backup zipped configuration file.
  2. Locate the directory with the configuration file you just downloaded.
  3. If your browser didn't automatically unzip the file, double-click the zip file to extract the configuration file.
  4. Copy the file EZ-Backup.Windows.LATEST.dsm.opt into the C:\Program Files\Tivoli\TSM\baclient directory. Be sure you copy the file that ends with "opt" and not the file that ends with the "zip" extension.
  5. Rename the file dsm.opt
  6. Right-click Start > All apps > IBM Storage Protect > Backup-Archive GUI, then select Run as Administrator.
  7. In the User Access Control dialog box, click Yes to allow the client to run.
  8. In Window Firewall's Security Alert dialog box,
    1. (optional) Click Allow access for the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager AGENT Client to run on Private Networks.
    2. At the TCP/IP invalid host name prompt, click OK.
    3. When asked Do you wish to continue for purposed of local backupset restore click Yes.
  9. In the IBM Storage Protect window, click Utilities, then select Setup Wizard.
  10. On the Welcome screen, select Help me configure the Client Options File, then click Next.
  11. Click Next to start the wizard.
  12. Verify that Update my options file is selected, then click Next.
  13. On the EZ-BACKUP Node Name screen, enter the Node Name supplied in the EZ-Backup confirmation email you received, then click Next.
  14. Verify that TCP/IP is selected, then click Next.
  15. On the TCP/IP Options screen, replace default server with the TCP Server Address value supplied in the EZ-Backup confirmation email you received.
  16. Still on the TCP/IP Options screen, replace the default port (1000) with the TCP Port information supplied in the EZ-Backup confirmation email you received, then click Next.
  17. Click Next to accept the recommended Include/Exclude List.
  18. Click Next to accept the recommended Common File Exclusion List.
  19. Click Next to accept the recommended Domain for Backup.
  20. Click Apply to confirm and accept this configuration.
  21. When prompted, enter as the password the Initial Password from the EZ-Backup confirmation email you received.
  22. When notified of a successful configuration, click Finish.

Test the New Configuration

  1. Close the Backup-Archive GUI client by clicking File, then Exit.
  2. Restart the Backup-Archive GUI client by right-clicking Start > All apps > IBM Storage Protect > Backup-Archive GUI, then selecting Run as Administrator.
  3. The client should start without prompting.
  4. For further confirmation, check connection information by clicking File, then Connection Information.

If configuring for automated backups, continue to next section. Otherwise, close the Backup-Archive GUI client by clicking File, then Exit.

Configure Automated Backups

  1. In the Utilities menu of the TSM GUI client, select Setup Wizard. The wizard will open.
  2. In the Welcome screen, click to put a check next to Help me configure the TSM Client Scheduler, then click Next.
  3. In the Scheduler Wizard screen, click Next.
  4. In the Scheduler Task screen, select Install a new or additional scheduler and click Next.
  5. In Scheduler name and location screen, change the default Scheduler Name to SP Client Scheduler.
  6. Click to put a check next to Use the Client Acceptor Daemon (CAD) to manage the scheduler, then click Next.
  7. In the Web service name screen, change the default Acceptor Name to SP Client Acceptor, then click Next.
  8. In the Option File Name and Location screen, click Next (accepting the default file name and location).
  9. In the Web Client Options screen, click Next (accepting the default port).
  10. On the Authentication screen,
    1. Verify that the Node Name matches what is listed in the EZ-Backup confirmation email you received.
    2. Enter the Initial Password (also supplied in the EZ-Backup confirmation email you received).
    3. Make sure the checkbox next to Contact the IBM Storage Protect Server to validate password is checked.
    4. Click Next.
  11. At the Service login options screen,
    1. Verify that The System account is selected.
    2. For When do you want the service to start, select Automatically when Windows boots.
    3. Click Next.
  12. On the Log file names and options screen, click Next (accepting default names and locations).
  13. On the Start Option screen, select Yes, then click Next.
  14. On the Confirm screen, click Apply. Wait for the process to finish. If prompted by firewall or other security software, allow the Backup Service (dsmsvc.eve) to access the Internet.
  15. On the Completing your configuration screen, click Finish to exit the wizard.
  16. Verify the configuration.
  17. Exit the TSM client.

Tidy Up

  1. Delete the compressed installer file you downloaded.
  2. Delete the zipped and unzipped configuration file (the original, not the copy you renamed) you downloaded.
  3. Make sure your power management settings do not prevent your system from performing automated (scheduled) backups.  A system that is powered off, or in sleep or hibernate states, can not perform a backup.
  4. Change your EZ-Backup password.

Update to Current Release

IBM provides an installer (what you just did) for major releases, then updates for security and other fixes. To get the latest security updates, please go now to Upgrade to Storage Protect Client version 8.1 for Windows and follow the procedure there.
