New DHCP Server Software FAQ for Technical Support Providers

Central DHCP services will be migrated from Internet Systems Consortium (ISC) DHCP software to a newer version of ISC software called KEA DHCP. This page will provide answers to some frequently asked questions about the upgrade.

This article applies to: DNS

When is this happening?

In early June, Network Services will begin migrating targeted networks to the new KEA environment. Larger migrations will be planned for mid-June and throughout the summer of 2024.

Why is this change being made?

The current version of ISC DHCP has been announced as end-of-life and the recommended migration path is KEA DHCP.

What are the benefits?

KEA is designed and developed for modern network environments.

Will I be affected by this change?

Campus IT professionals and Technical Support Providers will continue to interact with the campus DHCP servers via DNSDB. There will be no change to the customer experience for day-to-day operations.

How are lease times affected?

To simplify the configuration of the new KEA environment there will only be three classes of lease times. The 5-minute “registration” lease time and the 1-hour “default” lease time will not change. Any DHCP pool configured for longer than 1 hour will be placed in a new, 24-hour “long” lease time class. Network Services will be contacting net-admins responsible for DHCP pools that do not currently fall into one of these three lease time classes.

I have questions/concerns. Who can I contact?

Please email Network Services with any questions, concerns, or feedback.
